Evinrude Diagnostics Etc Software For Mac
I've been following this thread with interest for some time as I have a copy of the Evinrude Diagnostic software but had no connecting cables or serial port adaptor. Because it was quicker, easier and not much dearer, I took a chance and bought an aftermarket kit as all I wanted was the hardware.
Registered: Posts: 335 Posted Edited Executive Summary: Below is a detailed write up on how I run the Diagnostics software on a non compatible operating system. I have not connected to my motor yet as it is in storage, but will post results once April 2017 is upon us. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi I am starting this thread to describe my experience running the Etec Diagnostics software on a platform other than Windows supported operating systems (OS).
Software For Mac Computers
This thread is meant to handle the following scenario: 1) New Windows OS's in the future may become incapable of running the Etec DI Diagnostics software. 2) MacOS platforms cannot run this software without some sort of virtualisation 3) Linux platforms cannot run this software without some sort of virtualisation For each platform there is a work around, for example MacOS you can run Virtual Windows, and with Linux you can run Wine which I've read can be successful to varying degrees. The purpose of this write up is to illustrate a solution that will work across all 3 of the scenarios outlined above, and is exactly the approach we took at a large company I worked at as an electrical/ controls engineer. This is how we maintained our customer's plants whose random software was often old and compatible with only a certain antiquated version of Windows.
We had to connect with various controllers via serial, Ethernet, and other proprietary connections (let's call these X). We would always do this through a USB to X adaptor. So this is very applicable to running the Diagnostics software and connecting to Etecs (the 'plant' in this case) via a USB to serial adaptor. Some us may need to run this software that is now ageing on any given OS. The solution is simple: 1) Load VMware onto what we now call your 'base machine'. Installing VMware onto your base machine will allow you to run WMware Workstation and VM Player.
Workstation is required to create a virtual machine from an ISO (in this case we would use a windows XP or 8.1 ISO). You can use a windows installation CD to create this virtual machine, or you can easily download a Windows XP ISO from the net it's not hard. Keys are readily available too. 2) Once the virtual machine is created, VMware Player is used to open what we call an 'instance' of a virtual machine. In other words, your base OS will be running, but you will have opened VMware Player, and within that view, you will have for all intents and purposes a Windows XP or 8.1 computer, even though your base OS is perhaps a newer Windows flavour OS, a MacOS, or some flavour of Linux. So for example right now I run Linux on my computer.
But when I open up VMWare Player, I point to a file called 'Windows XP', and after clicking that, the VMWare screen shows me a Windows XP boot up sequence, and within that window I'm for all intents and purposes running a Windows XP machine, (albeit virtually, on my Linux based machine). The last step is to connect to the USB port. Because yes, in a way we have two computers now, one our base machine, and the other our virtual machine instance. This is simple. There is a drop down menu, and you just go ahead and assign a given USB port to the virtual machine and voila you are now ready to access the USB to serial converter which connects to your Etec.
Footnote 1 - Interested in running diagnostics simultaneously on twin or triple Etec rigged boats? It's entirely possible in my opinion to do this. You would run 2 or 3 virtual machine instances, with 2 or 3 serial adaptors connected physically to your base machine, routed to your starboard, port, and middle motor.
Footnote 2 - VMWare Workstation has a 30 day trial, and is required to create the original virtual machine file from an IOS (windows installation CD) file. VMWare Player is free for non commercial use. __________________ 2005 90hp I3 - Model E 90 DP L SO R - S erial 05083190 - 1972 18ft Starcraft Holiday. Registered: Posts: 2,886 Posted Edited My concern would be a layered operating system lockup or EV Diagnostics lockup running layered over a virtualization engine. Virtual overlay system lockups occur more often than OEM parent system base system lockups due to all the variations of virtual systems and their numerous versions trying to overlay all the different parent base operating system versions on the market. EMM firmware or storage eeprom is not likely damaged unless one is programming in new injector coefficients parameters or upgrading to latest firmware version and a lockup occurs.
